Rhode Island College underwent the construction of a new synthetic turf field for soccer and lacrosse at the location of the existing track, while simultaneously relocating and constructing a new eight lane NCAA competitive track with lighting at the location of the varsity athletic field. The design not only included the new track, but also included future phases for a new athletic services building, bleachers and press box, and other amenities into an overall master plan. The planned improvements are not only to provide the college with NCAA compliant track facility for their athletic programs, but also to increase enrollment and improve the overall athletic experience for students.
The KBA team lead the College through the programming process which included review and discussion of the various running track surfaces available, as well as visits to multiple installed facilities to see the track surfaces. This approach allowed the College to make decision based on their specific needs and goals. The project included the construction of a new 8-lane track, track events, fencing, lighting, and track equipment. Additionally, ADA accessibility was provided and significant drainage improvements were made to retain stormwater during larger rain events.
