Wheeler Elementary School was constructed nearly 60 years ago and required extensive renovations and repairs. A study was completed to identify the infrastructure deficiencies and site issues to determine the necessary repairs. The improved facility includes a renovation of all program spaces and the main office; a walkway addition connecting the administrative offices to the kindergarten wing; and upgrades to the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and security systems.
The main entry was relocated for improved parking, circulation, and security. Color schemes were incorporated for wayfinding, and new furniture allowed for increased classroom flexibility, student engagement and collaboration. The interior courtyard was created to allow for outdoor learning opportunities and provides plenty of natural daylighting for classrooms. Additional features of the renovated school include a new roof, windows, and doors. Site improvements include athletic fields and new separate age-appropriate playgrounds.
